Today the 3-year-old company produces 50 cases of flavored vodka a week for hundreds of locations across Michigan. Its products primarily consist of Red Fish (a berry flavor) and Root Beer Barrel. Hard luck vodka out of business. “As a relatively new vodka on the market and a Michigan-based company, we are especially proud that Hard Luck Candy Vodka competed and stood out among established, internationally-known brands.”. To make vodka, distillers take vegetable matter such as potato, rye, wheat or grapes and ferment it to create the neutral spirits that are the basis for Absolut, Smirnoff and other brands. Making a new vodka brand requires either setting up your own distillery or outsourcing the work to an established distiller. You’ll still be able to get Lotus Vodka, but it may require a passport. The end of Lotus was a terrible experience and something I hope that no entrepreneur has to go through. It was awful to work hard for several years, build a great team, raise capital from a great group of investors, build a great brand in a competitive industry only to have some arbitrary government action knock it down.
